Reading Your Tyre Size

If you’re not entirely sure how to read the dimensions on the sidewall of your tyres, we can help you understand exactly what each number and letters stand for.

a) Tyre Size Designation

The first number refers to the nominal width of your tyre’s cross-section in millimetres. The number after the ‘/’ indicates the aspect ratio. This represents the height of the tyre sidewall as a percentage of the nominal section width. The following letter indicates the construction of the tyre, with the number following it indicating the diameter of the tyres inner rim in inches.

b) Load Capacity

This number refers to the maximum weight the tyre can carry at the speed indicated by the Speed Rating Symbol/

c) Speed Category symbol.

A letter that indicates the speed at which the tyre can carry the load corresponding to the Load Capacity Index. Common ratings are: S, T, H, V, W, Y and Z.

Tyre Change

When it comes to your tyres, we do everything possible to ensure they are removed and disposed of responsibly. Our experts will then fit your new tyres correctly, ensuring that they are the right size, balance and at the right pressure. At Autodoctor, each tyre change consists of three elements:

1) Valve:

Our experts always recommend replacing the valve with each and every tyre change. This helps to maintain the correct tyre pressure and avoids further age, damage or deterioration. We also replace missing valve caps to prevent any dust or dirt from entering your new tyre.

2) Balance:

When fitting new tyres to a vehicle, the new tyre, the material or fittings may contain ‘heavy spots’disrupting your vehicle’s wheel balance. Unbalanced wheels will almost always cause unnecessary and uncomfortable driving vibrations that can lead to premature wear on your tyres, steering and suspension. At ATS Euromaster, our experts will always add balance weights to the wheel to ensure that your wheels remain perfectly balanced.

3) Disposal:

At Autodoctor, we’re very aware of the impact vehicles have on the climate and landfill, which is why all of our centres dispose of used tyres in an environmentally friendly way.

Original Equipment Tyres

What are OE fitment tyres?

Typically, tyres designs are fine tuned for each new vehicle, which is why many cars come fitted with a specific set of tyres from the factory.

While there are often a number of tyre designs that can give almost equal performance to OE fitment tyres, it is often the best option to go for the tyres that your car is already fitted with. At ATS, we can provide OE fitment tyres that have been homologated for a wide variety of brands.

Do OE fitment tyres affect vehicle performance?

OE fitment tyres are designed with performance in mind, so it is usually worth purchasing these for optimal fuel efficiency, handling, reduced rolling resistance and comfort.

If all your tyres wear out at once, you have much more choice in the kinds of tyres that you can choose for your vehicle and there are a number of good equivalents on offer. However, if only one or two tyres are wearing out then you should stick to the OE fitment tyres as these can keep the balance of your vehicle in check.

How do non-OE fitment tyres affect my warranty? Choosing non-OE fitment tyres can affect the handling of the vehicle and as such you run the risk of invalidating your warranty and your insurance. This is because OE fitment tyres are designed specifically so that your car handles in the safest way possible, which is why getting homologated OE fitment tyres is so important. OE marks to look out for So that you know you are getting the exact tyres that you want for your vehicle, keep an eye out for the marks of the OE fitment tyres for you. Important aspects to look out for when selecting your OE fitment tyres is the brand name, aspect ratio and size information and the product name. These can be found on the side wall of the tyre. Other information that is often also included on the side walls of OE fitment tyres are their eco ratings, load index and speed ratings and safety codes.
